John Gayler learned to kayak about the same time as he picked up his first camera, as a teenager growing up in the UK. Always up for a challenge he learned to read the river, navigate whitewater, and do an eskimo roll his kayak. Moving to the East Coast of the US he started leading instructional kayak trips for the American Youth Hostel association, the Boy Scouts of America and the World Scout Association, teaching hundreds of beginner and intermediate students to enjoy safe paddling techniques on whitewater rivers. On arriving in the Bay Area five years ago the nearest whitewater was along the coast, so he took his camera and his whitewater kayak to play in the surf and rock gardens, caves and arches along the Northern California coast from Monterey to Mendocino. Running the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon has always been an ultimate journey on his bucket list.
A lifelong traveler, his longer journeys include London to Istanbul by minibus, Frankfurt to Thessaloniki and Oslo to Helsinki via Nordkapp by car, the length of France by bicycle, wilderness backpacking in New Mexico, and weeks in a kayak on rivers in Northern Ontario. He has hiked the highest mountains in England, Scotland, Slovenia, Greece, Germany, and Norway, and recently circumnavigated Iceland by campervan and mountain bike. Preserving the experience and character of each trip in photographs has allowed him to share his travels, reflect on the experiences, and encourage people to plan their own adventures.
